This week in Bangkok...

So it's definitely been an interesting week here in Thailand with what Sam would call 'experiences'.  I've been enjoying the freedom of not having allergies by trying just about anything that looks like it might be good.  This has lead to some interesting discoveries:

Chicken Hearts!

  • chicken hearts are actually quite tasty - when fried - and were actually way less greasy than the other chicken pieces from the same lady
  • slow cooked plantain is my new favourite thing to eat for breakfast.  it's typically served with a sweet coconut sauce but I like them plain.  The lady that sells them to me has no English but she's very friendly and it feels authentic since the only other people I see buying from her are the Thai's in the area
  • They have fruit snacks at 7-11 (yes, they have many 7-11's) that are a cross between Fruit-to-go's and real fruit gummies - they're delicious and I keep a stash in my desk
  • Moo = pork, goong = shrimp, guy = chicken, fuk = gourd, cow = rice
  • I like spicy food... this is not a discovery but it shocks they Thai's sometimes.  Also, despite this love, I've found food that makes my eyes water and nose run because it is so spicy
  • Eat in well lit areas.  Last night I had 'moo' for dinner and there was a ton of lard in it.  I ate a little (cuz it kind of looked like squid) before realizing what I was doing
  • We take for granted our genetically engineered food - seedless grapes, watermelon and oranges
  • Whatever the purple fruit was (she said it was dragon fruit I think), it does not mix well with a variety of fruits but it is good when blended with pineapple.
  • they have restaurants where you order raw meat and grill your own food... it was an experience of (a) trial and error, and (b) spying on the other diners
you can use chopsticks or cutlery... since we are  farengai they tend to bring us cutlery

guess which desk is mine...
This week we've been in the school, and I was originally supposed to be planning.  Unfortunately, a last minute decision was made to have me do the language program training with the kindergarten teachers because I am teaching a conversation class.  This has eaten my days up leaving me with little time to plan, of which I am spending some of that time blogging as we speak.  To be fair, it's only 8:03 and I do have the plans made, I just need to type them and I have been working through part of my lunches.
I have no comment on the program.  I can tell you that I have spent a considerable amount of time developing my doodling capabilities but have practiced so much that I have actually run out of ideas for doodling!  Today is the final day of training (and the last day of the week since this weekend is a long weekend:D), so we have to demonstrate that we have learned the techniques.  This is going to be great.

As for the rest of my adventures, there have been a few.  When we got back from our retreat, Sam's air conditioner broke so we moved her mattress into my room and had sleep overs for a few nights before they came to fix it.  This I think was actually a good experience because it forced us to be more social (not that we weren't already) and it also encouraged us to leave our room... leading to more 'experiences'.

Walking to the mall I broke my flipflops, leaving me barefoot in Bangkok.  We quickly hopped in a cab and I was forced to get new sandals so that I would not offend anyone (as feet are the most disgusting part of the body in Thai culture, as part of Buddhism).

Hanging out with Joey and Aaron, we found a new market which I prefer to the one we had been going to.  This is my new favourite place to go for dinner and just wander around.  The people here have all sorts of neat food to look at and think about trying. (pics to come)

While getting together to sketch out what we will be doing on weekends - where we want to go - we went to Old Bar and I tried Tom Yum soup.  The broth was good, but the stuff in it is best left uneaten.

I'm happy to say that Sam's aircon is now fixed, so now my only roommate is a gecco that appears randomly.

For now, that's it.  I'll post about this weekend when I get back!  Love you all

  1. Obviously it's a good thing that the O'l man spiked your food as you grew up. I'm also glad that you're willing to try different things.
Can you get Slurpees at the 7-11's. I'ld bet the flavours would be unique. Hope you always have someone to go out with? Is your red hair an oddity for the Thai people?
    Stay safe and have fun.
    Love always, Dad.
